#80 On Waiting on the World

Sometimes we act like time is neutral. Like we’ve got all the time in the world to do the thing we keep putting off. But time doesn’t wait. It’s undefeated against humans. I got an art piece on us trying to catch time and it's available on a tee here.
In this episode of Happy Human, I’m talking about the trap of waiting on the world. Whether that's waiting for the economy to improve, for your schedule to open up, for the perfect version of your project to appear fully formed in your mind, for tools, the list goes on and on. But that moment doesn’t come. I have a whole story style episode on waiting: The Waiting Room. You have to move first.
Sketch83 and I were meeting up recently about business structure and talked about how we’re both navigating the backend of our creative projects and this hit me: a lot of people are still waiting on the world to put in the structure. But the world’s not going to tap your shoulder and say, “Hey, it’s time now, we’re ready for your vision.” That doesn’t happen.
If you’re going to build something... whether it’s a new business, a side project, or a creative practice... build it now. Build it when things are quiet. Build it while the market is slow, like right now. Build it when people aren’t buying shirts, because later, when they are, you’ll already be ready. I had a kid approach me about my cap while in Disney World's Magic Kingdom, it was the Happy Human Cap and I was ready, ready with a shop even when traffic to my site was slow, it was ready. I gave him the link. It's ready now, head on over haha. But yes, build! The foundations will be there when the market is ready.
I share some thoughts on how we do a great job of building “castles in the sky” like Thoreau mentioned in Walden Pond, but forget to build the foundation underneath. And the foundation? That’s the boring stuff. The work that no one admires. The learning curve. But that’s the part that lasts.
I also talk about Noah, Jordan Peterson, and how you can train for uncertainty but not avoid it. Whether you're building apps, music, podcasts, or your career, you have to stop waiting for conditions to be perfect. You move first. That’s how opportunity finds you. They Say Luck is when Preparation meets Opportunity! "He's so lucky..." No, he's not, he was prepared for opportunity and you call it luck.
